AAOF UOP Mathews Growth Study Overview The UOP Mathews Growth Study Curator: Sheldon Baumrind DDS, MS Institution: CRIL - Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, University of the Pacific The Mathews Implant Growth Study collection is uniquely important to our specialty because it is the only longitudinal cephalometric record set from subjects with Björk type implants available in the Western hemisphere. In addition, so far as we are aware, it is the only sample of patients with Björk type implants currently available for study anywhere. The sample was originally collected at the Section on orthodontics at the University of California at San Francisco School of Dentistry by Dr. J. Rodney Mathews during a 12 year period starting in 1967. The sample consists of 36 subjects for whom implants in the maxilla and mandible were placed by an open surgical method between the ages of four and seven years. Lateral, PA, and oblique cephalograms were generated at annual intervals midway between successive birthdays, but not all subjects were imaged at all time points. The original images are currently housed in the Craniofacial Research Instrumentation Laboratory (CRIL) at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. The full collection consists of approximately 1000 images. They have been the subject of a number of studies by Dr. Mathews, Dr. George Payne, and investigators at CRIL. Most of these papers are listed in the Baumrind CV of this proposal. The subjects are primarily of Northern European origin and some have received orthodontic treatment. This collection makes it possible to study jaw growth through time from the twin perspectives of anatomical and implant superimposition. During the present grant period, we will deliver to the Combined Legacy Collection a prototype sample of lateral, frontal, and oblique images for ten cases at multiple time points, together with overlaid landmark data for each image type. Our ultimate intent is to make all numerical data collected on this sample during thirty years of investigation available to the orthodontic specialty on line without cost through the agency of the combined legacy collection.
