| The Boero Acquisition Group was intended to include the records of approximately 75 growing and non-growing Class I and Class II subjects retrospectively drawn from the private practice of Dr. Roger Boero, an member of the Academic and Clinical Faculty of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. This records group was the earliest sample acquired in the retrospective component of the NIDCR supported study, DE08713 Adult Orthodontic Therapy: Extraction vs. Non-Extraction, that was conducted jointly at the University of California, San Francisco and the University of the Pacific. These records were originally acquired in 1987. |

| The records of the Dugoni Acquisition Group have been gathered retrospectively from the private practice of Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni, Dean and Professor of Orthodontics at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. This Acquisition Group represents the third iteration of a general strategy that seeks to analyze and re-integrate data from the full spectrum of treatment records for each patient in the sample. The first iteration involved the records of the Gibbs Acquisition Group and the second iteration involved the records of the Pearson Acquisition Group. Records and data from both these samples are already available at this site.
The Dugoni /U Pacific project aims to complement the Gibbs/UCSF and Pearson/UMDNJ projects by examining a records set of similar breadth and scope for orthodontic patients treated by a different expert clinician and evaluated by clinical faculty members in a different University Department of Orthodontics. In each study, we have accumulated a random sample of pre-treatment and end of treatment physical records of subjects who had been treated by a skilled orthodontic practitioner. Since we were interested primarily in studying the usual conditions and outcomes of conventional orthodontic practice, we have chosen to focus on the most common categories of orthodontic treatment, i.e., full bonded Class I and Class II extraction and non-extraction treatment. |

| The records of the Gibbs Acquisition Group were gathered retrospectively from the private practice of Dr. John Gibbs, Clinical Instructor in the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, in 1992. This records group was the last sample acquired in the retrospective component of the NIDC supported study, DE08713 Adult Orthodontic Therapy: Extraction vs. Non-Extraction that was conducted at both the University of California, San Francisco and the University of the Pacific. The Gibbs Acquisition Group constituted the first application of CRIL's strategy of acquiring data across the full spectrum of treatment records for each individual patient in any retrospective sample. |

| The Mathews Implant sample is the first long-term U.S. study of growing children with metallic implants of the Bjork type. The sample was collected by Dr. J. Rodney Mathews in the Section on Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, University of California San Francisco between the years of 1967 and 1979. Using open surgical methods, Dr. W. H. Ware, an associate of Dr. Mathews, placed 3 to 5 implants unilaterally in the mandible and a simlar number arrayed transversely in the maxilla. Subjects were recalled at annual intervals between the ages of 7 and 18 years although few have records at more than 8 time points. Lateral Cephs, Posterior-Anterior Cephs, left and right 45-degree obliques were collected at each time point. |

| The records of the Pearson Acquisition Group were gathered retrospectively from the private practice of Dr. Helmer Pearson, Clinic Director at the Graduate Orthodontic Clinic of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Acquisition of records was started in 1996. The Pearson/UMDNJ project intended to assess the agreement or disagreement among evaluations of clinical treatment records by different skilled orthodontic clinicians, quantify the degree to which different skilled clinicians agree or differ in their evaluations, and quantify the degree to which conclusions drawn from quantitative objective measurements of the physical records of orthodontics concur with conclusions drawn from non-quantitative evaluation of the same records by skilled clinicians. |
